Caroline’s scholarship on the diversity of artistry, is fundamental to her studio work. Her work investigates the cultural and societal dimensions involved in the making and reception of art. She is particularly invested in exploring hierarchies of art, especially those that have placed women’s intimate, and domestically, informed artwork at the bottom.

Caroline moved to PA in the 1980s to attend the University of PA. In 1987 Caroline earned an M.A. in Material Culture from the Department of American Civilization and in 1993 she earned a PhD from the Department of Folklore & Folklife. Her dissertation explored the “performance” of farming at agricultural fairs in Western Massachusetts.

Caroline moved to Nether Providence to start a family in 1995. She studied at the CAC in Wallingford PA while raising her children she was a regular at Catherine Porter’s painting workshop for many years. Caroline also taught art classes at Summer Spree and from 2003 to 2007 at Toby Farms Elementary for the CAC’s Outreach Program.

While continuing her artwork at home, starting in 2008, Caroline diverted a good deal of her created creative energy to the task of building two shops on the website Etsy, one offering vintage decorative arts, the other vintage fashion.

By 2018, with her Etsy shops well-established, Caroline was able to spend more time focusing on her own artwork. To that end, she joined Heron Studios in Gallery. In Mary Gordon, she found a mentor who understood and appreciated what she was up to. Moving upstairs in 2020, and back downstairs this summer she, continues to work here as a member of a Aston Mills Arts.
